Bamburgh Castle

Spanning nine acres of land on its rocky plateau high above the Northumberland coastline, Bamburgh Castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country.

Project

The brief was to showcase Bamburgh Castle as an exciting tourist destination through dramatic visual compositions that bring the history to life. The designs had to be accurate for the historians and archaeologists, whilst embellishing on some of the tales surrounding the castle to capture the imagination of the general public.

Solution

Photographic realism was key in creating a sense of authenticity surrounding the castle's history. The popularity of the castle has led to many photographers, bloggers, and other keen enthusiasts publish unofficial information about the castle. Therefore, we wanted to demystify these inaccuracies and in doing so present fact and fiction the way it was intended to be told.

We created a 3D illustration of the caste, to provide a much broader overview of the grounds and the different sections to visit within. It also operates as a guide to those planning a visit, with clear through routes and pathways identified.

Artistically, we used lots of subtle nuances throughout, such as; vellum (calf skin) scrolls, black letter inking and textured stonework. Our intention was to continually reference the past to make the user feel as if they've been transported back in time.
